Cytomegalovirus CMV
Cytomegalovirus infection is exceedingly common- in
most individuals with a healthy immune system, the
disease is very minor and does not cause significant
or dangerous symptoms. In those individuals with an
impaired immunity (such as organ transplant recipients
who are taking immunosuppressant drugs) the virus can
cause life-threatening infections.
The structure of CMV is similar to that of herpes
simplex, and antigenic glycoproteins from CMV have
successfully been engineered, expressed and delivered
to cells by L-particles. Pre-clinical studies are
ongoing to examine this application of the technology.
