Ionic Contraviral Therapy- ICVT

Ophthalmic Disease

Adenovirus infections

Adenoviral keratoconjunctivitis is a highly contagious disease that occurs worldwide both in epidemics which can affect thousands of people at any one site, or as a background level- so called endemic infection. Although not permanently blinding, adenoviral ocular infections remain the most common external ocular viral infections worldwide. The natural course of the acute phase of adenoviral keratoconjunctivitis has a wide spectrum of duration and intensity of local symptoms. After an incubation period of 2 to 14 days, symptoms usually begin in one eye, and the other eye becomes symptomatic after 2 to 4 more days. Typical symptoms include considerable soreness, redness, watering and pain in the eye.. During the course of the infection the normally clear part of the eye (the cornea) may become cloudy due to deposits of virus and antibodies. These corneal opacities may cause visual impairment for months or even years.

Currently, no specific antiviral therapy is available to shorten the course of the infection, to improve the distressful clinical symptoms, to stop viral replication, or to avoid the development of corneal opacities.

ICVT A12

ICVT A12 is the name given to a formulation developed by Henderson Morley for the treatment of conjunctivitis. It is an aqueous formulation (eye drops) to be applied directly to the eyes of those suffering with acute viral conjunctivitis.
This was studied in a phase l clinical trial in November 2003 and was found to be well tolerated and safe.
A clinical trial protocol has been approved for a phase ll clinical trial of this product, and studies are ongoing.

Other Ophthalmic indications
As ICVT is a broad acting treatment- active against a wide range of virus infections, Henderson Morley are examining the prospect of developing anti-viral eye drops that are active against herpes simplex eye infections and cytomegalovirus retinitis.
